We describe the features of a small enhanced journal, the Information Bulletin on Variable Stars (IBVS). It was founded 50 years ago as a bulletin, changed to a refereed express journal, appeared on the web early on, and is now electronic only, with rich content and services. Technically skilled authors, freely available bibliographic services and discipline-wide standardization — all characteristic of astronomy — form the foundation on which this uniquely enhanced journal is built, enabling it to provide quality services to its research community.
