Adomnan, ninth abbot of Iona, composed the Life of Iona's founder abbot St Columba (died 597) after he had spent 685 some time with abbot Ceolfrith of Wearmouth/Jarrow in Northumbria. At that time the monastery of Iona, established on a small island off the west cost of Scotland, was still the centre of culture and learning, but Wearmouth/Jarrow, the foundation of Benedict Biscop (674/682), was going to take its place. Therefore Adomnán, based on Gregory's the Great Life of St Benedict (Dial. II), described in three books the Life of the founder of Iona.
