The paper offers an overview of women’s literacy in medieval Hungary. Due to the later introduction of writing to Hungary literacy in general in this country developed differently as compared to Western Europe. Women’s literacy was also dissimilar. There were no such women authors as Hildegard von Bingen or Christine de Pisan. The first women able to read and maybe to write must have been nuns in medieval Hungary. There are some data suggesting that after the 12th century some female members of the royal house might have owned books, but their level of literacy was not very high. From the 14th century letters of noble women have also survived, while a century later burgher women in the German speaking towns began to use writing. Humanism influenced only the education and books of the Hungarian queens born and educated in foreign countries. A rather large number of codices copied by and for women were prepared at the end of the 15th and the first decades of the 16th century. These contained Hungarian-language sermons, legends, prayers, and treatises translated from Latin mostly for the use Dominican and Franciscan nuns for whom written vernacular texts were already a necessity at the end of the Middle Ages
