Tartalmi leírás:
Large prefabricated housing estates seem to represent one of the most globalised products of 20th-century urbanism; however, in Central and Eastern Europe, this type of urban fabric is much more dominant than elsewhere in the world. In addition, it is important to recognise that, beyond the ostensibly similar stories, every post-Communist housing estate has a special lifespan that determines its present state. The essay compares three housing estates: ®irmunai in Vilnius, which was one of the first large prefabricated estates, realised in the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics at the end of 60s; Havanna in Budapest, a result of the typical mass-production of the 70s; and one of the last constructed before the collapse of regime, Neu Olvenstedt in Magdeburg. These parallel histories seek to complement the international discussion over modern urban heritage now faced with sustainable development.
