The paper deals with the sources and use of sources of the catholic songbook
Zsoltári és
halottas énekek
by István Illyés (Trnava, 1693). Most songs of this collection are known from
earlier volumes. The only specific source Illyés refers to is
Cantus catholici
(Trnava, 1675),
though much more correspondence can be found with János Kájoni?s
Cantionale catholicum
(
?
umuleu Ciuc, 1676) and some protestant hymnals. According to the technical literature,
the protestant sources of Illyés?s book cannot be identified, but a profound examination
reveals that some of his texts can only be found in
Keresztyéni isteni dicsiretek
[Christian divine
praises] (Levo
?
a, 1654) and/or in
In exequiis defunctorum
(Cluj, 1692), and those two
collections contain all of Illyés?s songs with protestant origin, so he certainly used them.
Illyés treated his sources freely: he usually kept the first line, but often, and in the most
various ways, changed the rest of the song. In the case of texts having both catholic and
protestant sources, his version sometimes corresponds with one, sometimes with the other,
and sometimes with neither of them. The paper presents a number of examples for these
variations.
