Research projects on surname geography in Great Britain
The modern family name stock of Great Britain has been formed as a result of the long coexistence of several peoples and ethnic groups of distinct mother tongues in the isles; and, by means of immigrants arriving from different parts of the world, this name stock is continuously being enriched even today. The paper first briefly displays the reasons why and the circumstances in which family names appeared, spread and became established in Great Britain in the past; then, after mentioning some predecessors from the end of the 19th and from the 20th century, the author reviews research projects on family name geography in Great Britain carried out in the last fifteen years. Detailed discussion is given to Steve Archer’s digital surname atlas (2003/2015), to the geolinguistic analyses prepared by Wolfgang Viereck (2009), and to the large-scale, ongoing project known under the title of Family Names of the United Kingdom (FaNUK) (2010–2017). The paper also describes the influences of the presented name geographical research projects on related branches of science, and also their effects on the British community.
