Tartalmi leírás:
Although since the mid-19
th
century Hungarian scholars and researchers have studied the
history of erudition among women from many perspectives and examined the places of many
prominent
fi
gures, little light has been shed on the role of women in the social, cultural and
economic processes of past centuries. Because the nature and breadth ? or narrowness ? of
erudition among women has always been closely tied to the positions women have held in
the social division of labour, the history of women?s erudition should only be examined
in light of prevailing cultural life as a whole. In order to shed more light on this area of
the history of national culture, we must survey the transformations, interconnections and
divisions of the roles, frameworks, opportunities and limitations of erudition among women
in comparison with the erudition of the general population in various periods.
Until the Age of Enlightenment, the notion of erudition among women was not sharply
divided into creative endeavour on the one hand and receptive endeavour on the other:
the
fi
rst female Hungarian poets and authors wrote religious songs or translated texts into
Hungarian, much as female patrons of the arts supported the publication of religious books,
thereby enriching the rituals of the pious lives that they led. At the same time, women who
wrote in Hungarian or translated works written in other languages into Hungarian (which
until the 18
th
century was positioned on the border of scholarship in Latin) played important
roles in the evolution of the language. By the turn of the 18
th
-19
th
centuries, women had been
given an increasingly important role in the cultivation of national culture. In the preface
to his famous work
Hitel

angels of civil virtue and national identity.
