János Horváth (1878?1961), professor of Eötvös József Collegium (professor of Hungarian
literary history at Pázmány Péter University from 1923), took part of World War I from August 1914
to April 1917, serving as a second-lieutenant, then lieutenant, first as platoon commander, then as a
company commander. In the beginning he fought in the Serbian and Montenegrin front, then, as a
reserve officer of the Third Reserve Infantry Regiment from Debrecen, in the Russian (Wolhynian)
front from February 1916. He could not join his formation on its march to the Italian front because
he was discharged and a military command ordered him to join Eötvös Collegium.
His bequest include his front diaries, reports, commands, maps, sketch maps, official
documents, some issues of field newspapers, his correspondence with the soldiers, photographs
and field certificates which were written later. The basis of our text compilation is this material; the
description of the events is complemented with his letters to the director of Eötvös Collegium and
to his friends.
