The working paper deals with the problem of youth unemployment and young people not in employment, education or training (NEETs). It sketches the overall situation in the EU with special regard to the Central and Eastern European Countries. As a case study it presents the Hungarian situation and the government policies that aim to mitigate the problem. The author directs the attention to the tendencially increasing total unemployment as a basic reason for the unemployment of the youth, revealing that the share of the young people within the total unemployment has been decreasing in the majority of the EU-members in the last more than one decade.
