In relation with the construction of the new metro line of Budapest ? recently halted by the Government ? the Author provides an overview of the area of Kelenföld railway station that forms the western gate of Budapest and discusses its past and desired future development. Despite its favourable location within the city structure, the Etele square and its vicinity did not become an integral part of the capital, although this would have been beneficial from several aspects. In the Authors opinion, the planned fourth metro line would further strengthen its peripheral function.
In order to increase the value of the area, the following actions shall be taken: - pedestrian and public transport access to the stations subways from each direction shall be upgraded and the crossing with public transport routes shall be arranged, - when planning the improvement of the connection with the Pest side of the town, the recently opened Lágymanyosi bridge shall be taken into consideration, - urban railway link with the Pest side shall be established, utilising the existing railway tracks, - developing surface public transport shall improve the connection with other parts of Budapest. |
