A kapcsolatok mindkét fél számára pozitívak és kiegyensúlyozottak. Hosszabb időtávot nézve a kapcsolatok intenzitása változó. A magyar fél részéről a politikai és gazdasági mozgástér bővítése és az uralkodó befolyás csökkentése volt a cél. A kulturális intézményrendszer kiépült és jól funkcionál, elsősorban bölcsészeti és társadalomtudományi területre fókuszál. Jelentős szerepe van az olasznak, mint idegennyelvnek a középfokú képzésben. Az intézményrendszert területileg koncentrált, Budapestre, Rómába és Milánóba összpontosul. A gazdasági kapcsolatokban a főváros, és a Közép-Magyarországi régió súlya kiemelkedő, a vidéki térségeké csekély. A természetes kapcsolati terület földrajzi Dél-Dunántúl az általános magyar hátrányokon túl a közlekedési és kulturális elszigeteltség által és a követendő konzisztens stratégia hiánya által is sújtott. Olaszországban a kapcsolatok szintén nem véletlenszerűen alakultak, számottevő területi koncentráció észlelhető. Észak-Olaszország és különösen az észak-keleti és középső területek azok, amelyek érdekeltek a kapcsolatok fejlesztésében. A magyar szempontból leginkább kiemelkedő jelentőségű területek: Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Veneto, Emilia-Romagna és Lombardia. | The balance of the relations is positive for both parties. Looking at a longer period of time, the relations have had ups and downs. The main motivation of the initiatives by the Hungarian party is usually the expansion of the political and economic action space and the decrease of the dominant influence. The cultural institutional system is built out and relatively well functioning, but it mostly concerns humanities intellectuals, only. The role of secondary school language education is significant, Italian as the second foreign language is popular. The institutions show a strong regional concentration in both countries, the role of Budapest, Rome and Milan is outstanding. In the economic relations the weight of the capital city and the Central Hungarian region is dominant, the rural areas are less important by far. In the case of the geographical South Transdanubia the natural area of the relations, the general Hungarian handicaps are exacerbated by the transport and cultural isolation and the lack of a consistent strategy to be followed. In Italy the development of the relations is not accidental; a considerable spatial concentration can be seen. The North Italian, especially the Northeast-Italian and the Central Italian regions have an interest in the development of the relations. The main areas for the development of the Hungarian relations are the regions of Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Veneto, Emilia-Romagna and Lombardy.
